MSHP CELEBRATES 125 YEARS
Mackinac State Historic Parks turns 125 years old this year.
In 1895 when the federal government closed Mackinac
National Park, the country’s second national park after
Yellowstone, the State of Michigan established Fort
Mackinac as its first State Park. Today, Mackinac State
Historic Parks is a family of living history museums and
nature parks located in Mackinaw City and on Mackinac
Island.
To celebrate this birthday, Mackinac State Historic Parks
will have 125 days of events throughout the 2020 season,
spread across its family of sites and parks. Some high-
lights include movies in Fort Mackinac every Tuesday
during the summer, unforgettable evening cannon firing
events at Fort Mackinac, numerous events themed to the
anniversary at all of the historic sites, guided and narrated
treks to some of Mackinac Island’s most beautiful natural
and historic sites, and a special gala day, July 25, with free
music and fireworks to mark the actual anniversary.
Numerous State Park special events, reenactments, eve-
ning exhibitions and presentations take place through-
out the 2020 season. For more information, visit online
www.mackinacparks.com, stop by the Mackinac Island
State Park Visitor Center across from Marquette Park, or
