125 YEARS OF HISTORY O ver 80 percent of Mackinac Island is State Park property characterized by high limestone bluffs, beautiful vistas of sparkling water, vibrant for- ests, and unique geological formations. Whether experi- encing the Island on foot, bike, horseback or carriage, the many geological wonders and unique historical monu- ments are visual treasures. MSHP CELEBRATES 125 YEARS Mackinac State Historic Parks turns 125 years old this year. In 1895 when the federal government closed Mackinac National Park, the country’s second national park after Yellowstone, the State of Michigan established Fort Mackinac as its first State Park. Today, Mackinac State Historic Parks is a family of living history museums and nature parks located in Mackinaw City and on Mackinac Island. To celebrate this birthday, Mackinac State Historic Parks will have 125 days of events throughout the 2020 season, spread across its family of sites and parks. Some high- lights include movies in Fort Mackinac every Tuesday during the summer, unforgettable evening cannon firing events at Fort Mackinac, numerous events themed to the anniversary at all of the historic sites, guided and narrated treks to some of Mackinac Island’s most beautiful natural and historic sites, and a special gala day, July 25, with free music and fireworks to mark the actual anniversary. Numerous State Park special events, reenactments, eve- ning exhibitions and presentations take place through- out the 2020 season.
