What puts this particular 500 kV tower – located between the cities of Nantong and Rugao in eastern Jiangsu Province – onto our‘ remarkable list’ is not so much its style as its function. The tower has been engineered to support a total of 48 insulator strings, each made up of 30 cap & pin units – an eye-popping total of nearly 1500 porcelain insulator discs supported on only a single tower.
