Colplay's New Unique Sound

Upon the release of their new song, "Midnight," onto youtube, Coldplay fans everywhere could spot the difference in the sound of the new music from our British friends. Before the album was released, with three singles already out, it was quite obvious that Coldplay had chosen to go the EDM, or Electronic Dance Music, route, given that one of the singles, "A Sky Full of Stars, " was produced by EDM artist, Avicii. Is this a bad thing? Well, that question is for the listener to answer. Some people might argue that they love Coldplay’s new style of music. It brings them a whole new group of fans additional to their die-hards, and every artist or band has the right to experiment. But on the other hand, some might argue that it is a complete and utter nightmare. They’d say that their favorite band that has been making ravishing alternative hits since the year 2000 has sold out. “Sold out,” a term used to describe artists or bands that have adapted their sound to the more popular style of music, “the road most taken.” Either way, the change has already been made and the band appears to be happy, so why bother them?

It is upsetting to see such notorious and well respected band like Coldplay fall into the new genre of EDM music. Many fans won’t favor attending their concerts, only to see the new songs being played electronically, rather than authentically by the band. You know, with instruments. But maybe us music listeners need this rude awakening. Maybe we needed such a band like Coldplay to show us that times are changing, and with that, so does the music. No matter what, Coldplay will always be a great band with great lyrics and continue to make inspiring music, no matter what sound they take on. Whether it be jazz, heavy metal, or EDM, Coldplay will always be Coldplay just as long as they are together and making music.
