Biomedical Engineering Shapes Healthcare and Life
By Ir . Dr Nahrizul Adib Kadri Associate Professor Department of Biomedical Engineering Faculty of Engineering Universiti Malaya
Today , X-rays are used routinely for diagnosing broken bones , lung infections , heart problems and more
Biomedical engineering , by definition , is an inter-disciplinary field that combines biology , medicine and engineering . It is a rapidly growing discipline that combines these fields to develop medical devices , treatments , and diagnostic tools . It has been around since the early 19 th century when engineers began using their knowledge of mechanics to design prostheses for wounded soldiers in the Napoleonic Wars . Since then , biomedical engineering has evolved into an inter-disciplinary science with applications in virtually every area of healthcare , from diagnostics to treatment options .
In this short article , I will be sharing a list of biomedical engineering technologies that I believe provide the most impact on modern healthcare , including some fundamental ones that we cannot do without nowadays . These include the X-ray , magnetic resonance imaging ( MRI ), and artificial organs . I will also provide some insight into currently available technologies that I believe will pave the way for the healthcare of the future , namely robotic surgery systems and artificial intelligence ( AI ).
