value and importance of being ethical engineers from Year One of their studies and not just in their Final Year . Foundation of Engineering programmes should also place a certain level of emphasis on enlightening students that an engineer is a learned professional who is expected to exhibit the highest standards of honesty and integrity . Engineers need to be impartial and fair and must be dedicated to protecting public health , safety and welfare . They need to be exposed to the Code of Ethics which was established and accepted to ensure that we practise engineering without going astray while making engineering decisions which may put lives in jeopardy . The existence of codes dates way back to the 1750s B . C . when the Babylonians drafted the Hammurabi Code to establish standards to ensure that justice is served by setting fines and punishments for any individual proven to be guilty .
Finally , while we have been considering how we can “ nurture ” ethical engineers , I do hope that our engineers would be ethical by “ nature ”.
