Figure 7 : Change in rail and stage bus ridership in the Klang Valley
National Land Public Transport Master Plan
Realising the above challenges , and to curb traffic congestion in the Klang Valley , the Government formulated the National Land Public Transport Master Plan ( NLPTMP ) in 2012 that included the overall expansion plans for PT in the Klang Valley based on the following phases up to 2030 . The Government spent billions in new urban rail expansion projects , including the following :
● 35km Light Rail Transit ( LRT ) extension - Kelana Jaya Line , Ampang Line ( 2016 );
● 51km Mass Rapid Transit ( MRT ) I - Sg Buloh to Kajang ( 2017 );
● 52km MRT 2 – Putrajaya line ( 2023 );
● 38km LRT 3 – Klang , Shah Alam and KL ( 2026 ); and
● 50km MRT 3 – circle line in KL ( recently approved ).
Since 2016 , stage buses have shown a decline in ridership , while there was a steady but slow
increase in overall PT ridership in Klang Valley from 2015 to 2019 ( see Figure 7 ). Note the significant drop in PT ridership in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
E-Hailing
E-Hailing is a disruptive technology that appeared in 2014 with the advent of Uber . It filled up a vacuum in the then poor quality taxi services in Malaysia . MyTeksi was rebranded as Grab and in 2016 became the dominant player in PT travel for short distances . In the same year , stage buses started to show a decline in ridership . In 2019 , new regulations were introduced for E-Hailing that has now become an affordable and convenient door-to-door mobility service in addition to taxis . The increase in E-Hailing patronage and the decline in stage buses , implies that passengers using PT have a higher tendency to use urban rail coupled with E-Hailing services for their first and last mile connectivity .
