Engineering technologists are focused in terms of engineering practical practices
An Engineering Technology degree emphasises the application of specific engineering techniques . Graduates with an Engineering Technology degree often seek employment in fields such as production , design , manufacturing , and operations .
Currently , the Department of Civil Services Malaysia ( JPA ) does not have any provision for an engineering technologist to practise as an engineer in the J-scheme under the civil service . However , practices in many countries , such as Japan , Germany and Europe , where both are referred to as engineers , do not differentiate between engineering technologists and engineers . This is quite true since engineering technology graduates have obtained competencies of equal standing to engineering graduates with just a slight difference whereby engineering technologist are more focused in terms of engineering practical practice .
The duration of study for both engineering and engineering technology programmes are four years , with accreditation by the Engineering Accreditation Council ( EAC ) and the Engineering Technology Accreditation Council ( ETAC ) respectively . The curriculum for the Engineering Technology programme covers an engineering scope which is of equal standing with the conventional engineering programme . Engineering technologists have equal right , in terms of providing professional engineering works / services , with those of graduate engineers . This was highlighted in the Explanatory Notes to the REA 1969 ( Revised 2015 ).
BEM Registration Eligibility for Engineering Technology
REA section 7 ( 2 )( aa ) specifies that “ An Engineering Technologist who is registered with the Board may , subject to Section 8 , take up employment which requires him to perform professional engineering services ” [ 5 ]. Hence , it is mandatory for graduates of engineering technology to register as an Engineering Technologist if they wish to take up employment as such .
REA 1967 ( Revised 2015 ) states that an engineering technologist is a person registered under Section 10 ( C ). According to Section 7 ( 1B ) of the Act , an engineering technologist will be entitled to describe himself or hold himself out under any name , style or title using the abbreviation “ Eng . Tech .” after his name or in any way associated with his name [ 5 ].
Section 10 ( C ) explains the qualification for registration as an Engineering Technologist with BEM . A person who holds any qualification which is recognised by the Board shall be entitled on application to be registered as an Engineering Technologist [ 5 ].
BEM has made a few initiatives to recognise other professional qualifications to be substantially equivalent to a Bachelor of Engineering Technology degree . These include the recognition of CAAM ( formerly known as Department of Civil Aviation , Malaysia or DCAM )) Part 66 AML categories B1 / B2
