holder ( including at least one type rating ) [ 6 , 7 ] and qualification of Marine Certificate of Competency ( CoC ) Class 2 [ 8 ] as equivalency for the registration of an Engineering Technologist with the Board of Engineers Malaysia .
Engineering Technology Programme Providers
The recognised academic qualification for registration as an Engineering Technologist with BEM includes the following :
Engineering Degrees awarded in Malaysia A Bachelor ’ s Degree in Engineering Technology accredited by ETAC . For applicants graduating before January 1 , 2017 , degrees accredited by Malaysian Qualifications Agency ( MQA ) are accepted . For applicants graduating after January 1 , 2017 , degrees accredited by Malaysian Qualifications Agency ( MQA ) within the six years maximum from the date of accreditation prior to January 1 , 2017 , are accepted .
Currently , there are 16 institutions of higher learning ( IHL ) that offers engineering technology programmes under the accreditation by ETAC . In total , there are 69 Engineering Technology programmes that received accreditation by ETAC ( see Figure 1 ).
The engineering technology programmes offered in Malaysia are mainly dominated by the mechanical and electrical engineering disciplines . Table 1 shows the different types of engineering technology programmes that already received full accreditation by ETAC [ 9 ].
Engineering Degrees awarded in other countries An engineering technology degree accredited by a professional body which is a signatory of the Sydney Accord ( SA ) [ 10 ]. Following from the Washington Accord , a similar Agreement was developed for engineering technologists or incorporated engineers , called the Sydney Accord ( SA ). In the Sydney Accord , qualifications accredited or recognised by other signatories are recognised by each signatory as being substantially equivalent to accredited or recognised qualifications for the practice of engineering technology at the appropriate level within the engineering team .
Professional Pathway for Engineering Technology
In Malaysia , an engineering technologist has no pathway to achieve professional status unless they migrate to the engineering path to become a professional engineer . Currently , an engineering technologist must fulfil the requirements to
