What Others Say About Engineering Fraternity
By Samniang Saenram
REPORT
The engineering fraternity evolved from the development of technology over time , resulting from the systematic technique of making and doing things . The term technology when it first appeared in English in the 17 th century was used to mean a discussion of the applied arts only . Gradually these “ arts ” themselves came to be the object of the designation .
With the emerging complexity of engineering works , such as the 4.0 IR technology disruption , Building Information Management ( BIM ) and the demand for higher quality works , a wider range of engineering personnel in new disciplines will be expected in the future .
The double disruption of the economic impacts of the pandemic , and the increasing use of automation in transforming jobs , will require many employees , including those in the engineering fraternity team , to reskill themselves in order to stay relevant in the fast-changing technological landscape .
What Is an Aerospace Technologist ( Source : Learn . org )
Aerospace technologists , also called aerospace engineers , are professionals who design and test new flight technologies . Depending on their area of interest in the field , they may develop systems and parts for aircraft , spacecraft , satellites and missiles . Some choose to specialise in a particular subfield , such as aeronautical or astronautical engineering . When designing and testing aerospace technologies , they account for a wide range of considerations , including financial feasibility , customer satisfaction and Government regulations .
Impact of Digital Technology on Civil Engineers ( Source : ICE )
The following are snapshots from a cross-section of industry gathered for the ICE Future Engineers Seminar at One Great George Street in 2017 on the impact of digital technology on civil engineers .
Stuart Calvert , Head of Early Contractor Involvement ( ECI ) programme , Digital Railway :
“ Civil engineers will need to understand digital tools – whether that ’ s surveying tools , BIM tools , planning tools , virtual reality , or the associated control systems that support civil engineering . Understanding how they all come together as a system to solve a problem is the most important thing .”
Susan Bowen , Vice President and General Manager EMEA , Cogeco Peer 1 :
“ Organisations have to be thinking about the breadth and scale of the talent that they draw upon and nurture to fill different roles . The diverse challenges that businesses are faced with require insight , perspectives and qualities that don ’ t all come from the same traditional background .”
Mat Kellett , Mobile Mapping , UAV & OEM Sales Manager , Topcon :
“ Civil engineers should always be ready to reinvent themselves as there are always people out there who will do it faster and quicker . Make sure you keep up to date .”
Brian Higgins , Business Development Manager EMEA , ( ISC ) 2 Inc :
“ Organisations shouldn ’ t rely just on engineers – traditional engineers – to look after digital tools because it ’ s too big an ask . Get people in who can help them .”
