Case Study
Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, The Netherlands
The Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is one of the
busiest airports in the world. Open 24 hours
a day, seven days a week, the single terminal
airport consists of three halls, each connected
by several piers and concourses. It is the third
busiest airport in Europe in terms of passenger
volume, and the world’s 11 th busiest by total
passenger traffic. In 2016, over 63 million
passengers passed through the airport.
In 2015, Schiphol Group, Cofely, and Signify
entered into collaboration for the new lighting at
the terminal buildings at Schiphol Airport. This
meant that Signify would be the owner of all
light fixtures and installations while Cofely would
maintain a round-the-clock presence at Schiphol
Airport to service the lighting. Schiphol Airport
would pay a monthly service fee for guaranteed
lighting.
The move by Schiphol Airport to rent lighting
from Signify is in line with Amsterdam’s 2015
Sustainability Agenda, which proposed adopting
a circular economy to reduce wastage and
increase energy savings through investment in
energy efficient products. By applying circular
economy principles, Schiphol Group, Cofely, and
Signify have created a new standard in Europe in
the transition towards sustainable lighting.
The result: the 9,000m 2 terminal building saw
over 3,700 new lighting fixtures and installations.
The airport’s energy-efficient LED lamps enjoyed
a 50% reduction in electricity consumption
compared to conventional lighting systems. The
specially designed lighting fixtures for Schiphol
Airport also last 75% longer than conventional
fixtures because of their improved serviceability
and consequently, lifetimes. Since fixture
components can also be individually replaced,
this reduces maintenance costs and lowers raw
material consumption.
Today, millions of holiday and business
travellers continue to transit through Schiphol
Airport, enjoying the security and comfort of
sustainable lighting in a welcoming environment.
Signify Circular Lighting ensures Schiphol
Airport does not need to worry about lighting
maintenance and care, allowing them to fully
turn their focus to their travellers.
