INGENIEUR
Jalan Kinabalu Flyover, 1965
By Cheo Hong Keyong
The Jalan Kinabalu Flyover in Kuala Lumpur was
the first flyover road in the country built after
independence. It was implemented by JKR initially
as the “Kuala Lumpur Through Road Project” but
later became part the Kuala Lumpur Inner Ring Road
system. Jalan Kinabalu itself was formerly part of the
Old River Road.
Construction started in 1963 in conjunction with
the formation of Malaysia and was completed in 1965.
It was opened to traffic in August 1965. The name of
the Flyover was meant to introduce Kota Kinabalu, the
state capital of Sabah, which was then a new member
state. The Flyover, which had the highest peak
elevation in the city at that time, gave an impression
of Sabah’s Mount Kinabalu , the highest mountain in
Southeast Asia.
The Kuala Lumpur Inner Road is the city ring road
system linking up Jalan Sultan Ismail (Jalan Treacher),
Jalan Imbi, Jalan Shaw (Jalan Hang Tuah) and Federal
Route 1 [Jalan Kuching, Jalan Sultan Hisamuddin, Jalan
Kinabalu and Jalan Maharajalela (Jalan Birch)].
