Since commencement, TSIP has implemented
environmental management systems and
ensured that its operations comply with relevant
local environmental regulations. It has minimised
pollution through adoption of technology and
proper management of flue gas emission, waste
disposal and wastewater discharge. TSIP has
indicated impressive plant emission data for 2014
as shown in Table 2.
Ash and waste from TSIP are brought to the
Tuas Marine Transfer Station, a facility that allows
solid waste to be uploaded directly from vehicles
into long barges. Specially designed tugboats then
push the covered barges on a three-hour journey
to the Semakau Landfill located 30 km away from
the transfer station.
The Semakau Landfill is the only one in
Singapore. It was opened in 1999 and covers an
area of 350 hectares. In 2014, the landfill received
an average of 2,463 tonnes of plant ash and nonincinerable waste daily. It is expected to meet the
country’s solid waste disposal needs up to 2035.
