Life of a Counter Person

I work behind a counter at
Commercial Kitchen Parts & Service.
Sometimes I’m called a genius
Sometimes I’m called more.
I claim I’m no technician
yet when the equipment doesn’t work
the technician comes to me and asks me
“What makes this darn thing work?”
I’m supposed to know the numbers
of relays and valves and gears
for every unit made
for more than forty years.
As an engineer and machinist
and handyman, my lord
I’m supposed to be an Edison
combined with Henry Ford.
But life would be a pleasure
and I’d grin from ear to ear
if customers would only tell me
the model, make, and year.
