MALIA M . COHEN CHAIR STATE BOARD OF EQUALIZATION
Congratulations !
I am so heartened and excited about the release of the India Basin Equitable Development Plan , which will support the Bayview Community by ensuring that the India Basin Waterfront Park will genuinely support those who need and deserve it most .
As a two-term member of the Board of Supervisors for Bayview and the surrounding neighborhoods , I fought for all that the Equitable Development Plan encompasses , more healthy green space , jobs , youth development , healthy recreation , and celebrating Bayview ’ s rich history , arts , and culture . However , I am also acutely aware that sometimes even the best-intentioned investments in a neighborhood like the Bayview can end up displacing those we seek to serve . For this reason , I am so proud of the project team ’ s partnership with the community to create this plan .
I also want to celebrate the memory of our former Mayor Edwin M . Lee . Mayor Lee and I served as co-chairs of the initial India Basin Waterfront Taskforce , which planted the seeds for this report . Mayor Lee , like Mayor Breed , grew up in public housing and was an inspiring champion for equitable growth that allows ALL of us to benefit . His important legacy only grows because of this project .
I now serve San Francisco at the state level on California ’ s Board of Equalization , but I am raising my own family in this neighborhood . My daughter Madison and I couldn ’ t be more excited to enjoy this beautiful new green space along the Southern Waterfront . It ’ s about time .
Sincerely ,
Malia M . Cohen , Chair California State Board of Equalization
