500 days of Summer
Marc Webb's 500 Days of Summer is a story about a boy meeting a girl, portrayed in a non-linear format. Not many directors try their hands in non-linear storytelling, but Marc Webb surely took the risk. And from what I saw, he did an outstanding job. Also, disclaimer: To all those folks who prefer Action being the main genre of the movie- y’all probably won’t like it.
Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is an ordinary LA guy who works at a greeting card company. He develops a crush on his boss' secretary, Summer (Zooey Deschanel) the moment he sees her. Summer is an ordinary girl, who has just shifted to LA and is known for bringing happiness in people's life, much like the season. The movie takes us through the ebbs and tides of Tom's life, and describes the 500 days that Tom has known Summer. Joseph Gordon-Levitt surely is a lovely actor. It's always a pleasure to watch him. Not to mention the exemplary efforts put in by Zooey Deschanel, portraying one of the best on-screen chemistries. A fair part of the movie also explores the beautiful bonds of Tom and his sister, Rachel.
The soundtrack of the movie is absolutely flawless. From "She's Like the Wind" playing as the camera focuses on little details about Summer, to "Sweet Disposition" scattered throughout the movie, the music is surely going to get to your heart. For all the emos out there, keeping a box of tissues with you is advisable.
I do think that a change in colour of the entire scene could help set the mood of the scene and make the scenic beauty of Los Angeles more attractive. The dark tones weren't very intense, like in Batman films, and that makes the movie easy on the eyes. Whether you watch it in a blanket wrapped around your loved one, or while eating ice cream with your best friend and crying over a failed relationship, 500 Days of Summer is surely going to carve out a special place for itself in your heart.
