The plan was simple: follow the N2 from the Mother City towards Tsitsikamma and spend a week discovering just how much adventure is packed into one of South Africa’ s most scenic stretches of road. With a full tank and the load box packed for anything, I hit the road.
It didn’ t take long to realise that the Garden Route isn’ t just about pretty views and peaceful coastal towns. It is a playground for anyone who struggles to sit still.
My first lesson came at Redberry Farm, just outside George. At first glance, it looks like the sort of place where you could spend a relaxed afternoon picking strawberries and enjoying something sweet. But then you discover the maze.
The Redberry Farm maze is one of those attractions that sounds easy until you’ re inside it. Suddenly, every turn looks familiar and your confidence starts disappearing. It became less about finding the exit and more about pretending I knew exactly where I was going.
The farm is a great reminder that adventure doesn’ t always involve jumping out of a plane. Sometimes, it is simply getting hopelessly lost in a giant maze. But the Garden Route was only warming up …
THROUGH THE KNYSNA HEADS In Knysna, I joined Ocean Odyssey for a whale-watching experience, heading through the Knysna Heads in search of marine life along the coast. Being on the ocean changes the way you see the Garden Route. From the water, the coastline looks completely different, and there is something special about scanning the horizon, waiting for that tell-tale sign of movement.
“ I spotted about 50 bottlenose dolphins, a few seals that waved at us, and three humpback whales.”
THEN CAME GOLF I should probably mention that playing golf in the rain sounds considerably more romantic when you write about it afterwards.
