ONE WORD THAT DESCRIBES YOUR ART: Intimate
DREAM COLLABORATION: A project combining visual art and music, working closely with musicians to visually interpret their songs.
ARTWORK YOU WISH YOU CREATED: Anything that captures emotion simply yet powerfully. Timeless pieces that feel universal.
STUDIO ESSENTIAL YOU CAN’ T LIVE WITHOUT: Charcoal and music playing in the background.
WHAT THEMES OR EMOTIONS CONSISTENTLY SHOW UP IN YOUR WORK? Longing, love, distance, vulnerability, and emotional tension. I’ m drawn to moments where people almost connect, but not quite.
ARE THERE ANY MATERIALS OR TECHNIQUES YOU’ RE DRAWN TO? Charcoal is my main medium. It’ s imperfect, expressive, and unpredictable, just like emotion. I love how it can be both soft and harsh in the same piece.
WHAT DO YOU WANT VIEWERS TO FEEL OR QUESTION WHEN THEY ENGAGE WITH YOUR ART? I want them to feel something personal, as if the artwork is speaking directly to them. And maybe question their own emotions or relationships.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE AESTHETIC BEAUTY WITH DEEPER MEANING IN YOUR PIECES? I try to draw people in with simplicity and composition, but keep them there with emotion. The beauty is the entry point; the meaning is what stays.
HOW DOES AFRICAN OR SOUTH AFRICAN CULTURE SHAPE YOUR ARTISTIC NARRATIVE? There’ s a strong sense of identity, resilience, and emotional depth in our culture. Even in silence, there’ s a story, and that influences how I create.
DO YOU FEEL A RESPONSIBILITY AS A LOCAL ARTIST TO TELL CERTAIN STORIES? Yes, but not in a forced way. I feel a responsibility to be honest and to tell real, human stories that people here can relate to.
WHAT HAS BEEN A DEFINING MOMENT IN YOUR CAREER SO FAR? Seeing people connect with my work online, especially when they say it made them feel understood. That’ s when I knew it meant something beyond just drawing.
HOW DO YOU NAVIGATE THE BUSINESS SIDE OF BEING AN ARTIST? It’ s a learning process. Social media plays a big role, but I’ m also learning to value my work, build consistency, and think long-term.
WHAT’ S NEXT FOR YOU? I’ m working on a series inspired by music and emotional storytelling, possibly building towards a small exhibition or a curated online drop. IB
