ART FEATURE
Inbound SA caught up with the pioneering Cape Town artist, whose work lives in the space between connection and distance, silence and expression.
“ My artistic voice is emotional, raw, and intimate,” Welmé explains.“ I try to capture what people feel but struggle to say: those quiet, heavy moments that sit between words.”
WHAT FIRST DREW YOU TO ART, AND HOW HAS YOUR JOURNEY EVOLVED? I’ ve always been drawn to expressive art, which became a way to release what I couldn’ t explain. Over time, it shifted from just drawing what I see to drawing what I feel, especially through music and human connection.
HOW DOES SOUTH AFRICA INFLUENCE YOUR WORK AND PERSPECTIVE? South Africa is full of contrasts: beauty and struggle, silence and strong voices. That duality influences how I see emotion and storytelling. It pushes me to create work that feels honest and grounded.
WHERE DOES A PIECE BEGIN FOR YOU? Most pieces start with a feeling or a song. I sit with it, imagine a scene, and then let the charcoal guide me. I don’ t over-plan; I let the emotion lead the composition.
