PIONEERING THE GO-GO’ S ANNOUNCE THEIR DISBANDMENT
The Go-Go’ s announced their breakup on 10 May 1985, marking the end of a groundbreaking era in rock music. Formed in Los Angeles in 1978, the band emerged from the city’ s punk scene and quickly rose to fame. Their 1981 debut, Beauty and the Beat, made history as the first No. 1 album by an all-female band. Widely regarded as the most successful allfemale rock group, they influenced generations of musicians. Although they disbanded, the Go-Go’ s reunited multiple times over the years, celebrating their legacy. In 2021, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
BRITNEY SPEARS DOES IT AGAIN
On 28 May 2000, Britney Spears proved her star power with her sophomore album Oops!… I Did It Again. It debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 and quickly became the fastest-selling LP by a female solo artist in chart history. When it hit the 10 million mark soon after, Oops!… I Did It Again also made Spears the youngest artist to earn multiple Diamond certifications by the Recording Industry Association of America( following the success of her debut, Baby One More Time. The album, which also topped charts around the globe, featured the hits Lucky, Stronger, and the title track.
BLUR EARNS FIRST UK NO. 1
On 15 May 1994, Blur earned their first
No. 1 album in the UK with Parklife, a defining title in the Britpop canon. Featuring such hits as Girls & Boys,
End of a Century, and the title track, the band’ s third studio album marked their commercial breakthrough, remaining on the UK charts for 90 weeks. Elsewhere, Parklife helped the band find new audiences across Europe( where it landed in the Top 10) and in the US. Today, it remains Blur’ s bestselling studio album in the UK. In 2010, Britain’ s Royal Mail included Parklife in its set of 10 Classic Album
