What’ s the biggest thing you’ ve learned about balancing career and motherhood?
SASKIA FALKEN
“ I actually don’ t think I’ ve ever met a woman who’ s truly cracked that code and I certainly haven’ t yet either. What I do know is this: you learn to live with the tension. There are seasons where your career needs you more, and seasons where your child does and sometimes, inconveniently, they both need you at once. I’ ve missed things on both sides. Big meetings. Important moments. And I’ ve made peace with the fact that you can be deeply committed to both, and still feel like you’ re falling short some days.”

“ Time is valuable and your babies, they only stay little for so long. Appreciate the time you have with them growing up. There is always a way to find balance between work and family, once you have made the decision see it through and apply yourself to the best of your ability. I had to miss my daughter’ s Grade R concert, but I was front and centre for her Grade 1 concert. Communication is very important – I made sure she knew why I had to miss it, how sad I was to miss it, had family members send me the videos and watched it with her, congratulating her on a fine job! When you show up for your kids or your career, be present.”
