From Durban theatre stages to opening for some of the biggest names in comedy, Robby Collins has built a career on observation, honesty, and finding humour in everyday life.
Known for his sharp observational humour, candid storytelling, and fearless take on tough topics, Robby Collins has become one of South Africa’ s most recognisable comedy voices. Following the release of his latest comedy album, Robby Collins Live At The Smoke Show, he reflects on his stand-up journey, creative process, industry challenges, and what comes next.
HOW DID YOUR JOURNEY INTO COMEDY BEGIN? Before I started doing stand-up, I was doing theatre in Durban. I had always wanted to do standup comedy, but back in 2007, there were no comedy clubs in Durban, so theatre became my creative outlet. As soon as I heard about an open mic opportunity, I jumped at it.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU FACED EARLY ON IN YOUR COMEDY CAREER? Stage time. Just getting onto a stage was the biggest challenge. I started performing anywhere that would give me access to a microphone, including small restaurants and local venues.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR COMEDIC STYLE? I think my style has evolved over time. Right now, it’ s become much more observational. I enjoy looking at everyday situations and finding the humour in them.

WHAT INSPIRES MOST OF YOUR MATERIAL? Whether it’ s something happening in the news or a strange experience I’ ve personally had, there’ s always material to work with.
