“
The music industry [ today ] is so much more accessible and yet even more difficult. When we were first signed to Virgin / EMI, I was 22. Back then, we didn’ t have social media, so we had to work really hard just for an opportunity for our demo to be heard. You had to hustle and push to stay relevant. Now your visibility is at the press of a phone button, but strategy is important,” reflects Lois.
“ I am learning so much from my nephews and their journey with music, but [ I am ] seeing how what we learned all those years ago is equally important. We were privileged to have media training, and you had to be able to sing or perform to get seen or heard. I guess the challenge now comes when trying to implement what I’ ve been learning.”
According to Lois, musicians and singers continue to face challenges due to the high cost of recording, while the‘ burning’ of CD’ s has declined in the streaming era.
“ Popularity has become a reason for many. One thing that has not changed is that live performance is and will always be our lifeline, and the blessing is that I still get to do it.”
In 2018, Lois returned to South Africa and quickly re-established herself in the local performing arts scene. The following year, she starred in Rock of Ages at Montecasino, earning her second Naledi Award nomination. Her screen work includes: award-winning film Father; Krismasboks( 2021); Yolanda is Swanger( 2023); and Disaster Holiday( 2024).
In addition to her acting career, Lois released her single Same God in 2022, which reached number one on the CCFM Top 10 chart. Audiences can currently see her on eTV’ s House of Zwide, where she brings Pearl to life in one of South Africa’ s leading prime-time soap operas, now in its fourth season. IB
