CELEB Q & A
“ My feet remain deeply rooted while my branches learn the sky.”
We’ ve watched her journey from Backstage to Lockdown and, most recently, as Crystal Dlamini in Netflix’ s Umthetho: a career shaped by faith, family, and a constant desire to evolve.
Here, Lorcia opens up about career pivots, success, motherhood, travel, self-love, and why she prefers alignment over chasing the next big thing.
LOOKING BACK AT YOUR JOURNEY SO FAR, WHAT MOMENT CHANGED THE DIRECTION OF YOUR CAREER? I think there have been many pivotal moments, from starting out as a professional dancer at the age of 18 to my acting debut on Backstage, which marked the start of an acting career I could not have imagined. It was a true testimony of God’ s grace.
Playing Tyson on Lockdown somehow shifted how I was viewed as an actor and opened doors to roles that are more layered and complex. It’ s what I love about storytelling: humans are not linear or onedimensional. My artistic offerings allow me to dig deeper with every role.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU’ VE LEARNT ABOUT YOURSELF THROUGH YOUR WORK? I’ ve always been big on integrity and honouring the story. My view is that it may be someone’ s story out there, and respecting that is crucial. I view my work as my way of serving through storytelling and, with dance, through movement.
The process is equally as important as the result. No point in a good product if the experience leaves a bitter taste. Who we are is as important as what we do.
WHAT DOES SUCCESS MEAN TO YOU? Bringing home more than just the pay-cheque. Fulfilment is key. To remain true to myself, remain authentic, and just keep doing the work, both in my personal life and career.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE, AND HOW DID YOU NAVIGATE IT? Navigating the inconsistency of our industry is not easy. My faith in God and my belief system keeps me centred. Prayer, submission, and alignment to God are my peace. Taking stock regularly also allows me to pivot when necessary.
WHAT KEEPS YOU GROUNDED WHEN LIFE AND WORK GET BUSY? The blessing of my kids. They’ re my biggest inspiration and my motivation to keep striving, to be relentless about achieving what I’ ve set out to do.
I love teaching dance. Every student in my class is a reminder to remain curious about life and to be brave about my own self-discovery.
My mindset is gratitude for it all. My feet remain deeply rooted while my branches learn the sky. To carry humility and grace. To live and let live. Everyone is journeying in their own way, and most of us are doing the best we can. We’ re all living this life for the first time.
WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WISH YOU KNEW WHEN YOU WERE STARTING OUT? To not take it all so seriously. That I didn’ t have to internalise everything. To learn the lesson, forgive myself quickly, integrate, and keep it moving.
To love myself first, deeply and fully, and not search for it outside of myself. The love we seek starts with ourselves. Everyone around us simply expands it.
HOW WAS IT PLAYING CRYSTAL DLAMINI IN THE NETFLIX CRIME DRAMA UMTHETHO? What a privilege to have told such an incredible story through Crystal. The realisation while playing this role opened my eyes up to the fact that so many women have fought the fight for justice and have not been acknowledged.
