FINAL VERDICT
The 2025 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is more about refinement than revolution. The E220d is neither ostentatious nor sporty. It excels at being what it has always been: a sanctuary for those who prioritise tranquillity over showiness. In a market dominated by electrification and SUVs, the E-Class remains a peaceful reminder of how rewarding a traditional luxury saloon can be. IB
On the road, the E-Class reminds you why sedans should never have fallen out of favour. With air suspension and rear-wheel steering, it moves with a grace that SUVs cannot match. It glides smoothly on motorways and handles tight turns with ease. The steering is light yet precise. At 120 km / h, the cabin is almost silent, with the engine barely audible. Long journeys feel shorter, and daily commutes become more peaceful.
THE PRICE OF LUXURY
Luxury, of course, comes at a cost. The E220d AMG Line starts at just over R1.5 million, with options pushing it close to R2 million. The test car had nearly R600 000 in extras, including the Superscreen, air suspension, and illuminated grille. The figure is more manageable than that of a similarly equipped GLE SUV, but it still requires careful selection. Mercedes offers a two-year unlimited-kilometre warranty and a five-year maintenance plan.
