With so many SUVs on the road today, this refined saloon harks back to an era when luxury was understated. For decades, the E-Class has been recognised as an executive car, often seen parking in company bays long before crossovers and flashy model names became widespread.
A SEDAN IN AN SUV-OBSESSED WORLD
Who still buys sedans? Not many, but those who do know exactly what they want. That is what makes the sixth-generation E-Class appealing. It avoids trends and remains true to quiet confidence and classic German precision.
Nearly every modern car today is tall and squareshouldered, sporting badges that suggest adventures most owners never pursue. But not so long ago, the polished executive saloon was the pinnacle of the corporate world. The E-Class was more than just a means of transport; it represented success. Arriving in one implied you had a corner office and a bespoke suit.
Sedans are now less popular. Mercedes-Benz South Africa sells significantly more SUVs than sedans, with BMW and Audi following suit. Nonetheless, the E-Class endures, supported by buyers who prioritise comfort over height.
Approaching the new W214, the familiar elegance returns with contemporary updates. Mercedes design remains predictable in a comforting way, like nesting dolls where each model echoes the next. This new E-Class adds subtle character through sleeker headlights, an optional illuminated grille, and taillights adorned with tiny three-pointed stars. The test car’ s Verde Silver Metallic finish, complemented by off-white leather, draws attention without being overly loud.
DIESEL DONE RIGHT: POWER, POISE AND EFFICIENCY
The E220d AMG Line is powered by a 2-litre turbodiesel delivering 145 kW and 440 Nm, with a mild-hybrid system briefly increasing output to 162 kW. The figures are impressive, but the real focus is on efficiency. The 0 – 100 km / h sprint takes 7.6 seconds, suitable for an executive saloon. Mercedes claims 5.0 L / 100 km, and we achieved 5.5 L / 100 km in mixed driving. Over 900 km on a single tank, with range to spare, highlights modern diesel excellence.
A CABIN BUILT AS A MODERN SANCTUARY
Inside, the E-Class aims to be a sanctuary. The cabin combines advanced technology with traditional comfort. The MBUX Superscreen spans the dashboard, creating a digital environment that feels part luxury lounge, part futuristic cockpit. It is impressive, although it might be overwhelming for loyal E-Class buyers. A built-in selfie camera for online meetings adds a humorous touch, reflecting modern trends.
Beyond the technology, the materials are exquisite. Stitching, ambient lighting, and generous rear space enhance the experience. The 540-litre boot remains practical.
