features native plants , both shrubs and perennials , that provide a colorful and showy interest throughout the seasons of the year .
Each year , club members maintain many garden areas in the borough including Main Park ’ s Butterfly and Hillside Gardens , the Ardmore Boulevard daylily and grass beds , and the Avenues Project .
The Garden Club holds several annual fundraisers , including an online Sarris Easter candy fundraiser , a Plant Sale in the spring , a raffle of garden items at Forest Hills Community Day , the Poinsettia Sale for the year-end holidays , and a Sarris end-of-year Holiday fundraiser . The club uses the funds to help maintain the garden areas and support its service projects . The fundraisers are open to everyone .
“ I was retiring in 1998 and my wonderful neighbor , Margaret Reed , suggested I join The Garden Club of Forest Hills ,” recalls Amy Shugerman Glasser , longtime member . “ Many years later , not only do I still have many friendships , but I have gained loads of knowledge . The members of the club were always helpful and were eager to teach . I was and am still amazed by the insight , talent and creativity these ladies have and the ability to share .
“ My concept of life is ‘ you teach every day and learn every day ,’” she continues . “ My granddaughters can ’ t wait to come over to plant flowers and vegetables and learn how to care for the garden . I am grateful to the club and what it has to offer . Thank you , GCFH , and here ’ s to another 100 years !”
The Garden Club of Forest Hills meetings are held the first Thursday of each month at 10 a . m . from March through December at Hope Lutheran Church , 353 Ridge Avenue . Each meeting includes a brief review of the club ’ s business , a program , and a light lunch . Throughout the year the club presents a variety of programs related to gardening , floral design , environmental issues and more .
New members and guests are always most welcome . You do not have to live in Forest Hills to become a member .
