parents from a distance. U.S. Census Bureau statistics indicate that
the number of older Americans aged 65 or older will double by the
year 2030, to over 70 million. As the Baby Boomers start to age, more
Americans may find themselves in this Sandwich Generation.
Carol Abaya, founder of the Sandwich Generation term, has broken
this term down into three additional categories:
• An Open-Faced Sandwich is anyone who may be involved in
the care of an elderly loved one.
• The Traditional Sandwich is anyone sandwiched between
aging parents who need care while still providing care for their
children.
• A Club Sandwich is anyone in their 50s or 60s sandwiched
between aging parents, adult children and grandchildren.

WHAT CAN THE SANDWICH GENERATION DO?
As more Baby Boomers become both sandwich generationers
and seniors, the need to understand aging dynamics and family
relationships increases dramatically.
Adult children in the Sandwich Generation may find that as their
loved ones age, they need to provide more support. It could be
financial support, or physical assistance with daily care needs such
as grocery shopping, meal preparation, housekeeping, dressing,
bathing and incontinence management.
Both home care services and personal care communities are great
options for seniors who need help. Home care service providers can
go into your loved one’s home and perform the daily care services
for you. Personal care communities provide 24 hours a day/seven
days a week assistance with all activities of daily living, along with
activities and programs, medication administration, nursing care,
meals, housekeeping and laundry service, all in a safe, supervised
environment. “The biggest benefit of placing my elderly mother in a
personal care community was peace of mind,” states one Sandwich
Generation daughter. “When Mom was home, I was always running
