Edgewood Elementary school teacher Joseph DeGroot, along with Principals Vanessa Jackson and Allison Kline and Gifted teacher Jill Keresztury, will be expanding the Woodland Hills Elementary Science Tournament to include the Woodland Hills Intermediate School thanks to a generous grant from the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh and the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh. WHEST, the moniker that the students of Edgewood have endearingly used to refer to the day-long STEAM program since its beginnings in 2013, was funded this year through a grant that was awarded to Woodland Hills Intermediate teachers Eric Meredith and Jack Howell. The materials grant included over $2,500 to assist in the implementation of a Science Olympiad program for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students at the Woodland Hills Intermediate School. Some of the events include “Beat the Calculator,” where students test their math skills against the speed of a calculator; oodland Hills BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE WOODLAND HILLS FOUNDATION. STEAM Grant Awarded to Woodland Hills Teacher for Science Education Program “Circuit Wizardry,” in which students race to complete an electrical circuit; and “Straw Towers,” which involves the use of 40 straws in an attempt to build the tallest tower with the ability to stand for 10 seconds. Students will compete in these events, which are Standards-Aligned Science modules. They will also learn to exemplify teamwork and team-building as well as demonstrate problem-solving skills throughout the contest.
