WEST MIFFLIN VFW AWARDS THREE SCHOLARSHIPS
West Mifflin Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 914 Intrepid awarded three Walt Kuczma scholarships to students during the West Mifflin Area High School senior recognition day on May 24 . Earning the top award was Nathaniel Schmude . Miranda Ferguson was named the second place award winner , while Isabella Colaianni took third .
In addition to each winner receiving a recognition certificate from the post , the scholarships included monetary awards of $ 500 , $ 300 and $ 200 respectively . Each of the students competed by writing an essay themed “ My Vision for America .”
The submitted works were judged by faculty members of West Mifflin Area High School . The compositions will be read at
JACOBS TAKES FIRST PLACE FOR ACHD EARTH DAY ENVIRONMENTAL POSTER CONTEST
The Allegheny County Health Department ( ACHD ) announced the three winners of its 18th annual environmental poster contest in commemoration of Earth Day 2017 .
The theme of this year ’ s contest was “ Bright Ideas for Conserving Energy .” Students were encouraged to create posters depicting how they can help reduce energy as well as save and protect the environment .
“ Every year it is wonderful to see the creative ideas from students on energy conservation ,” said Dr . Karen Hacker , Director of the Allegheny County Health Department . “ I congratulate all the winners of this year ’ s contest .”
Eighth grader Lauren Jacobs of West Mifflin Area Middle School took first place this year with her colorful poster showing us “ brighter paths in preserving energy ” such as changing out light bulbs , installing solar panels , and supporting other forms of alternative and renewable energy .
Classmates Sydney French and Hannah Petrichevich , both 8th graders from Ingomar Middle School , came in second and third place respectively . Sydney explored the benefits of renewable energy sources as well as energy-saving tips such as carpooling and recycling materials . Hannah gave energy-saving tips that can lead to a healthier and happier Earth .
The winning students will receive a $ 75 Barnes & Noble gift card , and the teachers of the winning students will receive a $ 50 Staples gift card . The winning posters were displayed for the public at FutureFest 2017 at Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens . All participating students will have their posters displayed at the upcoming Air and Waste Management Association ’ s annual conference and exhibition , to be held in Pittsburgh this June .
