High School Students Invoke Nationwide Change: Fundraising for Blood Cancer Research
Written by TJHS student Aiyana Swanson.
A schoolwide dodgeball tournament, 50 / 50 raffles at various sporting events, bracelet sales, T-shirt sales, and auctions are among the fundraising efforts accomplished by Thomas Jefferson High School’ s 2025 – 2026 Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to funding research and providing aid to individuals diagnosed with blood cancer. This dedication can be shown through four of Thomas Jefferson High School’ s proud students, Ryder Mulvahill, Ryan Dugan, Dylan Hart, and Tess Obiero. Although all Thomas Jefferson students represent our core values of empathy, respect, and integrity, these four students have distinguished themselves.
Every year, teams from different schools have 7 weeks to plan events and fundraisers for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Obiero worked tirelessly with the student visionaries of the year program. Obiero then chose her own teammates based on their various connections. She later announced that,“ We got around $ 10,000 … we raised the most money in Pittsburgh this year”. These students exemplify the very best of the West Jefferson Hills School District, and the district is proud to recognize them. Ryder Mulvahill, Ryan Dugan, Dylan Hart, and Tess Obiero are not only exemplary students, but leaders, volunteers, and problem solvers.
