State Route 51 Taking Longer Than Usual? Here’ s Why:

Daily travel for residents and commuters is already being impacted by a multi-year infrastructure improvement project on State Route 51( SR 51), led by PennDOT. This major construction project began in March and is scheduled to continue through 2027.
The three-year effort includes extensive roadway improvements involving concrete patching, curb and median replacement, resurfacing, and updated traffic signal sensors. Due to the scope of the work, lane restrictions will be in place throughout construction, with one lane open in each direction to maintain traffic flow.
Breaking Down the Construction Zones and Traffic Shifts To minimize disruption and organize the work in manageable phases, the SR 51 project will be divided into three zones:
• Zone 1( 2025): Ciccanti’ s to East Bruceton Road
• Zone 2( 2026): East Bruceton Road to Denny’ s / Pep Boys
• Zone 3( 2027): Denny’ s / Pep Boys to the railroad bridge
Motorists can expect the following traffic pattern changes throughout 2025:
• March: Temporary restrictions began for median removal.
• April – June: Traffic shifted to the northbound lanes, with one lane open in each direction.
• June – October: Traffic will shift to the southbound lanes, with one lane in each direction.
• October: Final shift to the curb lanes as work continues into the fall.
Throughout the duration of the project, left turns are prohibited along SR 51 except at designated intersections. Increased congestion is anticipated on surrounding roadways such as SR 885 and Old Clairton Road as drivers seek alternate routes.
Additional Roadwork Nearby In addition to SR 51, secondary construction is also taking place on Lebanon Church Road and Curry Hollow Road. Improvements in those areas include drainage replacement, concrete patching, turn lane additions, roadway widening, and resurfacing.

Planning Ahead This much-needed infrastructure improvement is essential for long-term safety and smoother travel, but it will come with challenges along the way. Residents are encouraged to plan ahead, expect delays, and allow for extra travel time, especially during peak commuting hours. While these delays can be frustrating, the long-term improvements made to SR 51 will better serve drivers, businesses, and residents across the region. est Jefferson Hills BOROUGH OF JEFFERSON OF HILLS HILLS NEWS LIBRARY LIBRARY NEWS NEWS
