SCHOLARSHIP

major in pre-pharmacy or
pre-med.
What’s
news in
Upper St. Clair
Saint Vincent College officials arrived at
Upper St. Clair High School on Jan. 16 with
cameras flashing, videos rolling and balloons
popping to surprise a senior Connor
McCormick on his birthday in “prize patrolstyle” with the news that he won a $160,000,
four-year, full tuition, room and board
scholarship in the Saint Vincent College
Wimmer Scholarship Competition.
Melissa Sobek of the Saint Vincent
College Office of Admission, asked the
principal to call McCormick to his office
to present him with an oversize check and
inform him of his first place performance
on the College’s recent national scholarship
examination. The Wimmer Scholarship
Award accompanies enrollment at Saint
Vincent.
McCormick will graduate from Upper St.
Clair in June.
His parents were fully aware of the
presentation and were present for the
surprise announcement
McCormick plans to major in prepharmacy or pre-medicine in the Saint
Vincent College Herbert W. Boyer School
of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and
Computing.
A top student at Upper St. Clair, he has
completed advanced placement courses
in U.S. History, physics, economics,
psychology, calculus AB and chemistry.
The Wimmer Scholarship Program is
named in honor of Archabbot Boniface
Wimmer who founded Saint Vincent
College in 1846 as the first Benedictine
6 724.942.0940 TO ADVERTISE | Upper St. Clair
college in the United States. The program is
designed to recognize high school students
with outstanding academic abilities and
to encourage them to pursue a quality
undergraduate education at Saint Vincent.
The scholarship winner is based on the
performance of a written examination which
was given at the College in November.
Students who participated in this year’s
examination were nominated by their high
school principals because they were college
bound and met academic qualifications.
This is the 32nd year for the scholarship
competition. More than two hundred
high school students participated in the
competition this year.
