C3 Logix baseline concussion testing leads to faster diagnosis , better treatment of head injuries

Head injuries and concussions are an inevitable part of our favorite sports . Although we can ’ t prevent them , we can help diagnose and treat them faster and more effectively with C3 Logix concussion baseline testing — available now at the Allegheny Health Network ( AHN ) Peters Township Health + Wellness Pavilion .
Edward Snell , MD , Director of Allegheny General Hospital ’ s Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship and Sports Concussion Clinic . He also serves as head team physician for the Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Organization , and is on Major League Baseball ’ s concussion committee and the sports advisory board for the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association .
Why should athletes get a baseline concussion test ? When an athlete has a suspected concussion , he or she will receive a concussion assessment similar to the baseline test . Each concussion is unique , and being able to compare post-injury test results to baseline test results can help health care professionals identify the effects of the injury and make more informed return to school and play decisions .
Who should consider a baseline concussion test ? Concussion baseline testing is available for athletes ages 10 and up and is especially recommended for those playing contact sports such as football , lacrosse , soccer , basketball , cheerleading , hockey , and gymnastics .
What is a baseline concussion test ? A baseline concussion test is a pre-season exam conducted by a trained health care professional that is used to assess an athlete ’ s balance and brain function , including learning and memory skills , ability to pay attention or concentrate , and how quickly he or she thinks and solves problems .
AHN is the sole provider of C3 Logix baseline concussion testing in western Pennsylvania . Like other concussion evaluation tools , C3 Logix includes a computerized neurocognitive exam . However , C3 Logix also tracks a patient ’ s dynamic vision reflexes and ability to visually focus on moving objects . The tool features an advanced battery of tests that effectively measure motor skills and balance through a unique iPad application . When the iPad is strapped to a patient ’ s back , the app collects accelerometer and gyroscopic data to assess postural stability while the patient attempts various stances on both firm and soft surfaces .

AHN athletic trainers offer baseline testing with C3 Logix to all 19 school districts that receive athletic training services through AHN ’ s Sports Medicine ’ s scholastic program . The system is also being used at Robert Morris University and with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds professional soccer team .
