ALCOA FOUNDATION
SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED
TO UPPER ST. CLAIR HIGH
SCHOOL STUDENT
2016 Upper St. Clair High School graduate
Hannah Cafaro receives $4,000 Alcoa
Foundation Scholarship.
With immense pride and well wishes, the
Alcoa Foundation announced that Hannah
Cafaro has been selected as a 2016 recipient
of a $4,000 Alcoa Foundation Scholarship.
This award is payable in increments of $1,000
per academic year. Hannah is the daughter of
Jane Blemker and Joseph Cafaro of Upper St.
Clair.
Hannah will attend the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill to study Biology and
Psychology on the Pre-Medical Track. After
graduating from UNC, she plans to further
her education by attending medical school to
become a pediatric surgeon.
Hannah graduated from Upper St. Clair
High School, where she was exceptionally
involved in academic, extracurricular, and
community activities. She was a member of
the Dean’s List, National Honor Society, and
National Society of High School Scholars, as
well as the Co-President of the Kids Helping
Kids Club, the Co-Leader of the USC Biology
Club, and a featured artist in exhibits at
USC. Additionally, Hannah volunteered
at Children’s Hospital of UPMC, Animal
Friends, and through mission trips and

activities with her school and Zion Lutheran
Church.
Recipients of Alcoa Foundation
scholarships are selected based on several
criteria including a high aptitude for academic
achievement, leadership, community service,
character and employment.
In 2016, with a total applicant number of
256 and a range of 13 countries, 65 students
from nine different countries were selected.
Throughout the 2016-2017 academic
year, the Alcoa Foundation will aid 250
students, who represent 73 Alcoa locations
in 11 countries, with financial assistance for
their undergraduate education. The Alcoa
Foundation Sons and Daughters Scholarship,
which began in 1953, has contributed
approximately $20.7 million toward
educational expenses for over 3,800 children
of Alcoa employees.
The Alcoa Foundation, founded in 1952,
is a nonprofit, corporate organization that
ardently values the environment, education,
and community. The foundation’s global,
communal investments have exceeded
$635 million in its 64 years of existence,
and it has contributed over $22 million to
nonprofit organizations worldwide in 2015
alone. This organization continues to strive
for innovative and active engagement to
facilitate improvements to the condition
of the environment and community, while
assisting future generations of engineers and
manufacturers to the fullest extent possible.

in the Twenty-first Century.” Come and be

Hazo Live
Date: Monday, Sept. 19
USC resident Dr. Sam Hazo is the author
of poetry, fiction, essays and four plays. He
was Pennsylvania’s first State Poet from 1993
to 2003. He will discuss and then autograph
Zen Practice: An Introduction
Date: Thursday, Oct. 13
Head Priest Kotoku Ray Crivello, from
the Zen Center of Pittsburgh, will talk about
Zen Meditation—what it is, and how to get
started.
Mary Robb Jackson: My Life in
Broadcasting
Date: Monday, Oct. 17
Jackson, a 40-year veteran of local
broadcasting, will share her perspectives on
the business, as well as some of her personal
experiences while working as a TV reporter.
