Acoustic Afternoons
South Fayette High School
was one of six high schools
in southwest Pennsylvania to
receive the Governor’s Civic
Engagement Award (GCEA) for
registering at least 65 percent of
their eligible
student voters.
Lead by
senior Rachel
Dorfner and
sophomore
Emily
Kulkarni, the
high school
received the Silver Level award,
which was presented by the
Pennsylvania Departments of
State and Education and the
Governor’s Office in collaboration
with Inspire US, a nonprofit,
nonpartisan organization that
trains and assists students
working to increase voter
participation.
In its second year, the GCEA
program encourages eligible
Pennsylvania high school
students to participate in
elections as voter registration
drive organizers, voters, and poll
workers. Eligible student voters
must be 18 years old or will turn
18 on or before the date of the
next primary, special, municipal
or general election.
Thanks to Dorfner and
Kulkarni, the District also
received the Pennsylvania Voter
Registration Cup, a statewide
competition the girls started
competing in a few months ago.
By collecting points for different
civic engagement efforts they
implemented in the high school,
they received first place for the
most points earned.
