T
his March, the second grade students took part in the
Artist in Residence program offered by the Pittsburgh
Center for the Arts and sponsored by the South Fayette
Elementary PTA. All of the students were fortunate to work
with well-known artist, Tom Sarver, who also worked with the
second grade last year on an installation art project.
The students had the opportunity to create a puppet that
was part of a final presentation that took place on April 2. Fortytwo students were chosen to be part of a show for parents and
students. Through this experience, the students learned how
to artistically express themselves through the creation of their
puppets, scenery, movements, and a script. All of this would not
have been possible without the donations of supplies from the
parents and families, the hard work by the students, and the South
Fayette Elementary PTA.
Mr. Sarver holds
a Bachelor of Fine
Arts in Painting
from Tyler School of
Art, Temple University,
as well as an Master of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Arts from
SUNY Purchase College. He is currently working on a puppetry
initiative in Pittsburgh called “Puppet Happening.” His work has
been featured at the 2013 Carnegie International at the Carnegie
Museum of Art. Mr. Sarver has also featured several of his solo
exhibitions in various locations across the Northeast.
