Getting to know our South Fayette Nutritional Department continued starchy and other vegetables must be met. Students are required to select at least one (1/2 cup) serving of fruit or vegetable to qualify as a reimbursable “meal.” Grains served are required to be whole grains. Lunches and snacks need to meet the “Nutrition Standards for Competitive Foods in Schools” mandate meeting guidelines for calories, fat, and sodium. Changes included only offering fat free and fat free flavored skim and 1% milk. South Fayette did not have a problem with the new additional fruit and vegetable quantities, because we were already offering 16-21 fresh fruits and vegetables daily. Our snacks in the South Fayette Intermediate School and Middle School meet the “Health Hunger Free Kids Act 2010 guidelines.” Snacks in these schools are ONLY offered after the student has gone through the line and has had the chance to finish their lunch. Snacks are offered the last 10 minutes prior to dismissal. We don’t believe in letting the student select a snack in lieu of their lunch. Snacks are served only 1 day a week for the intermediate school.
