CHILD CAR SEAT SAFETY CHECK

Shaler EMS is sponsoring a child car seat safety check on Thursday, October 20, 2016 between 3:00 P. M. and 6:30 P. M at our station located at 339 Wetzel Road. Your child’ s car seat will be inspected by a certified technician. Checks are by appointment only. Please call 877.498.4332 to make an appointment.

The Shaler Area Rotary recently donated a TracFab tracked wheelchair to a local veteran from the Shaler Area School District community. The disabled Air Force Veteran received the wheelchair at the conclusion of the Shaler Area Rotary’ s annual golf outing on June 6. The Veteran was disabled while serving in the Air Force in Germany in 1980 when he was 22 years old.

The Shaler Area Rotary sponsored a number of fundraisers and received donations from many local businesses and organizations to make this gift possible. Shaler Township encourages you to support the Shaler Area Rotary fundraisers. The strong sense of community demonstrated by this gift to a well deserving area Veteran demonstrates the commitment of the members of the Shaler Area Rotary.

TRAVELING SHALER ROADS IN UNCONVENTIONAL WAYS Shaler roads are used by many people for many different purposes. Basic travel is an obvious reason, and not everyone does this by car. Shaler resident, Jeff Mulkern is just such a person. Jeff travels the roads by foot. Here is how he describes his experiences:

Jeff has a strong interest in being able to safely travel by foot for obvious reasons. Due to progressive vision loss, he hasn’ t driven a vehicle for 30 years. Approximately 25 years ago, he began using a white cane for mobility. Eventually he lost 100 % of his vision.

Jeff has a message to the many anonymous souls who have stopped to let him cross Mt. Royal Boulevard, or otherwise yielded to whatever path or roadway he was following,“ I say – Thank You. Unlike what is portrayed by TV actors playing the parts of blind characters, I have no extraordinary sensory abilities to fully offset my vision loss. Even though I may be walking on what appears to a driver to be a wide shoulder, I greatly appreciate it when cars slow down a bit when passing by and give me a few feet of clearance.“
