New Leaders in Athletics Will Propel Titan Pride haler area school district SHALER AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT NEWS
STEPHANIE STRAUS NAMED SHALER AREA DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
The Shaler Area Board of School Directors has appointed Stephanie Strauss as the district’ s next Director of Athletics. Dr. Bryan O’ Black, Superintendent of Schools, shared,“ This marks a significant and exciting step forward for Shaler Area as we continue to enhance opportunities for our student-athletes and strengthen Titan Athletics.”
Strauss has a proven track record, bringing a deep and well-rounded background in athletics leadership. She most recently served as the Director of Athletics & Activities for the Penn Hills School District, where she strengthened athletic operations, expanded student access to programs, and cultivated a robust network of support.“ I’ m looking forward to developing strong relationships with the student-athletes, coaches, and the entire Shaler Area community as we build upon the strong traditions and success of Shaler Area Athletics,” Strauss expressed.
In addition to her administrative experience, Strauss has spent several years as a collegiate volleyball coach. Her time coaching women’ s programs at the NCAA level— including serving in leadership roles at the United States Naval Academy and Juniata College— has given her a unique perspective on athlete development, program culture, and the importance of teamwork and accountability.
Strauss has roots in Shaler Area and is looking forward to serving the community. Her late grandfather, Cliff“ Lefty” Fair, was a proud Shaler High School graduate and member of the Shaler Area Athletic Hall of Fame.
BEN YECKEL APPOINTED HEAD VARSITY BASEBALL COACH
Ben Yeckel has been named as Head Varsity Baseball Coach. Coach Yeckel brings keen coaching insights and a strong history with Shaler Area to the role. A Titan himself, Yeckel was a four year starter for Shaler Area during his own high school career. He’ s worked with Shaler Area for over 2 decades, serving as Varsity Assistant Coach and head 9th-grade Coach. During his time as assistant coach, the team won 3 WPIAL titles, 1 state runner-up, and 1 state title.
Dr. Bryan O’ Black, Superintendent of Schools, expressed,“ Coach Yeckel brings a tremendous blend of leadership, instructional expertise, and a deep understanding of what it means to build a successful and student-centered athletic program. Coach Yeckel’ s passion for the game— and for mentoring young people— aligns directly with our district’ s mission to Engage, Empower, and Excel. We are confident that under his leadership, Shaler Area Baseball will continue to grow, compete at a high level, and represent our community with pride.”

MICKEY MORAN NAMED HEAD VARSITY BOYS WRESTLING COACH A lifelong Titan and standout student-athlete, Mickey Moran has been named the Head Varsity Boys Wrestling Coach. Coach Moran brings a deep connection to the community, an exceptional wrestling pedigree, and a passionate commitment to growing the Shaler Area wrestling program.
A 2004 graduate of Shaler Area High School, Moran wrestled for the Titans from childhood through graduation, following in the footsteps of his father, who also competed for the program. His accomplishments on the mat place him among Shaler Area’ s elite: Moran was a four-time section champion at 160 pounds, a 2003 WPIAL champion, and the 2004 PIAA state runner-up. Since returning to the program in 2022, Moran has served as Assistant Head Coach for the varsity team. Coach Moran expressed,“ I am extremely grateful for this opportunity. It’ s been a lifetime dream to come back and coach the program that gave so much to me. I’ m very excited about the team we have and look forward to helping these young men achieve their goals in life and on the mat.”
