Student Published in Young Writers’ Anthology
Join us in congratulating Ashley Lang, sixth grade student at Shaler Area Elementary School, who was selected to have her original piece of creative writing published in a Young Writers’ anthology. Ashley submitted her story to the Young Writers’ Scary Tales contest this past October and was chosen from among many entries. Her work was critiqued on perception, imagination, and creativity, as well as expression, originality, and use of language. Scary Tales— Are You Afraid Of The Dark? is available now.

Memorable Music
First-grade students from Marzolf Primary School enjoyed a day that expanded their perspective of the world. Students traveled to Heinz Hall to hear the renowned Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra play a musical rendition of Danbi Leads the School Parade by author Anna Kim. Students learned about Danbi, a young girl who immigrated to America from Korea and makes new friends while learning valuable lessons about what unites us. The story was read by the author as the colorful illustrations were projected above the stage.
SAMS Visit Pittsburgh Glass Center
This year, Shaler Area Middle School students traveled to the Pittsburgh Glass Center to learn about the science and art of working with glass. Students learned about the elements that create the various colors and felt the heat from the furnaces that keep the glass in a liquid state 24 hours a day. Each student got to help with the creation of a glass pumpkin, including blowing into the tube to‘ inflate’ the original glass ball, using a wooden paddle to flatten the bottom, and using a mallet to break the finished pumpkin off its blowtube. These elements gave students opportunities to feel the viscosity of the liquid glass, giving them an appreciation for the skill needed to battle against the constant pull of gravity and the simultaneous strength and delicateness of the glass while sculpting. haler area school district SHALER AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT NEWS
