This spring, several Shaler Area Middle School instrumentalists earned the opportunity to participate in Pennsylvania Music Educators’ Association( PMEA) festivals. On March 13 – 14, three orchestra students represented the school at the Junior High Orchestra Festival hosted by Hampton Middle School, and on April 10 – 11, three band students took part in the Junior High Band Festival at Trinity High School. Congratulations to all of these talented musicians on a wonderful performance!
Student-Led Activities Amplify Autism Awareness
In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, OWL Squad members at Reserve Primary took a student-led approach to spreading a message of kindness and inclusion. Members visited every classroom to read books tied to the theme, and a student delivered a morning announcement encouraging peers to be patient, find common ground, respect personal space, and speak up for those who are excluded. It was a meaningful reminder that awareness starts with everyday actions, and that students can lead the way.
Burchfield Student Wins Highmark Caring Place Poster Contest
Annie J., a third grader at Burchfield Primary School, was selected as the regional winner of the Highmark Caring Place annual poster contest, which invited students to illustrate how to support a grieving friend. Annie drew on her experience as a member of Burchfield’ s Caring Team, a student leadership group that facilitates grief awareness programming with School Counselor Lezlie DelVecchio-Marks. She was surprised with the news during art class on April 30, where Highmark Caring Place’ s Lead Grief and Clinical Services Specialist presented her with a certificate and gift card. shalerarea. org | 37
