YOUTUBE LIVESTREAM
At their regular business meeting on June 9, the Township’ s Board of Commissioners unanimously approved switching streaming platforms from Facebook to YouTube. At the same meeting, the Board also approved a proposal to upgrade the audio and video equipment in the meeting room, enhancing the quality of those livestream videos.
There are several reasons for the change to YouTube from Facebook. First, Facebook, unlike YouTube, frequently limits videos to 720p or 1080p for recordings and livestream videos, whereas YouTube supports up to 4K video. Therefore, video quality potential is lower with Facebook than YouTube. YouTube is the second-largest search engine in the world behind Google. Content streamed to YouTube is saved permanently, if desired, allowing it to be found and watched for years, whereas Facebook content has a shorter lifespan( typically 30 days).
Facebook also requires a user to have an account and, although free, is an additional step for anyone wanting to watch a live video. YouTube, however, does not require an account so the extra step of creating said account is not needed. Research and studies have also shown that users on YouTube are more prepared for long-form content with an average attention span geared toward watching 1 + hours of video, whereas Facebook users prefer shorter, faster-paced content.
Given the timeline for installing the new equipment in the meeting room, the Township currently anticipates livestreaming on YouTube beginning in September. This is subject to change. Follow the Township’ s website( www. shaler. org) and Facebook page for more information.
