in the LOOP What’s news in Sewickley Area CARDINAL WUERL NORTH CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL PREPARES THE FUTURE WORKFORCE During the fall of 2015, with a generous grant from the Heinz Endowments, Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School (CWNC) created a Career Development Program. Under the guidance of Jennifer Parsons, Program Manager, CWNC began several initiatives aimed at increasing career exploration and selfawareness for the entire high school, beginning in 9th grade. “This program has the potential to support and advance industry and economic development in the greater Pittsburgh area for years to come,” says Luke Crawford, principal of CWNC. “We are excited to be at the forefront of this initiative. As part of our mission as a Catholic school, we are proud to offer these opportunities to a wide range of students from diverse backgrounds and various academic levels.” In order to help with career research and growth, students will be expected to create a Career Action Plan that will be monitored throughout their entire high school experience. These plans will be used to aid students in the following areas: determining what starting salaries are, what majors are suitable for their career interest, researching school cost of attendance, attending mini-workshops, learning self-awareness and etiquette skills, drafting resumes and cover letters, and taking part in job shadowing opportunities and a mock interview. The end goal is to develop this program with local companies and employers in order to create a vast network of resources available to all students at CWNC. NATIONAL MERIT SEMIFINALIST Congratulations to Helen Fielding who was named a 2015 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist. Fielding earned the distinction of Semifinalist based on her PSAT scores from Oct. 2014. She is a home-schooled student and lives in Sewickley. According to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, about 1.5 million juniors in the U.S. take the Preliminary SAT. The list of Semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. Semifinalists have the chance to continue in the scholarship competition. About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to proceed to Finalists, and half of the Finalists will be awarded a National Merit Scholarship. 8 724.942.0940 TO ADVERTISE | Sewickley VERLAND 2016 FUNDRAISERS Verland, located at 212 Iris Road in Sewickley, is gearing up for its 2016 fundraisers.
