This year’s showcase featured a record number of projects from 28 school districts. The projects were funded by STEAM grants that are awarded annually by the Center for Creativity at the Allegheny Intermediate Unit and funded by Chevron and the Benedum and Grable Foundations. Now in its ninth consecutive year, nearly 175 STEAM grants have been distributed with more than $3 million in funding provided to school districts throughout southwestern Pennsylvania. NHSD Points of Pride, Tradition and Excellence tarting in October, North Hills School District now takes time at one of our monthly Board of Education meetings to recognize students and staff members for the excellent work that they do inside and outside the classroom. Points of Pride, Tradition & Excellence presented by Superintendent Dr. Patrick Mannarino focuses on accomplishments in academics, arts, athletics and leadership and demonstrates how we our preparing our students for successful futures. Videos and presentations will be posted online monthly on the district website under the About heading, social media outlets including YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and on the district’s cable access channel. Ross Township | Winter 2016 | icmags.com 37 N OR TH HI L L S SC HOOL DI STRI C T N E WS orth Hills High School ninth-grade students Nina Topich and Julianna West along with North Hills Middle School teachers Joe Welch, Larry Dorenkamp and Rich Texter highlighted the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) achievements of North Hills School District as part of the 2016 STEAM Showcase. The Center for Creativity at the Allegheny Intermediate Unit hosted the showcase, a regional celebration of STEAM education that featured how students and teachers have infused STEAM concepts into school curriculums to redefine student learning. North Hills students displayed components of Grade 8 Civil War Innovations projects including: • Live 3D printing of a Union artillery cannon designed by Ronnie Novosedliak and Patrick Caye • 3D-printed models created by students of inventions and developments of the Civil War era such as telegraph machines, railroad engines, ironclad war ships, ration kits and canteens among others. They also featured a video that detailed student demonstrations from various classroom projects such as: • Jamestown and Salem Stop Motion Stories • French and Indian War Cartoon Animations based off of George Washington’s 1753 Journal • American Revolution “Break Up Music Videos” • American President Analogies using Aurasma (Augmented Reality App) • Andrew Jackson Documentary Development using TouchCast TV Production App Nor th Hills School District N North Hills Curriculum Highlighted at STEAM Showcase
