North Hills High School ’ s Dance Marathon Raises More than $ 14,000
North Hills High School held its second annual Dance Marathon for 12 hours in January in two North Hills Middle School gymnasiums to raise funds for the local Make-A-Wish chapter and the Four Diamonds Fund that supports families affected by childhood cancer . The event raised $ 14,050 .
The dance marathon was based on the legendary and successful dance marathon , THON , held at Penn State University each year . At the North Hills event , each dancer was required to raise an entrance fee of $ 25 , but participants were encouraged to raise as much as they could to support the two charitable organizations benefiting from the dance marathon . Hundreds of students stayed on their feet dancing , moving and playing games while helping youth and children affected by cancer and other life-threatening illnesses .
NH Middle School Teacher Selected as Only PBS Digital Innovator in Pennsylvania
North Hills Middle School social studies teacher Joe Welch has been selected as a 2016 PBS LearningMedia Digital Innovator for Pennsylvania . He is one of only 52 highqualified educators selected this year from among hundreds of applicants across the United States and its territories .
He will attend the 2016 PBS LearningMedia Digital Summit and the International Society for Technology in Education Conference in Denver in June . Over the next year , Welch will receive professional development opportunities to aid him in further developing his digital classroom . These opportunities will make him part of a robust community that fosters new ways of thinking about using technology to drive student achievement .
In his classroom , Welch is known for creative and innovative projects that bring American history alive for his eighth-grade students such as creating animated videos of the French and Indian War that highlighted the significance of the war in western

The event was spearheaded by high school teachers Jennifer DiPasquale and Amy Patsilevas and sponsored by the high school ’ s Student Council and Hands for Service Club .
Pennsylvania , remixing current songs into break up song music videos with Great Britain using GarageBand and iMovie and writing an illustrated children ’ s book that explained the Declaration of Independence using Book Creator for iPad . In recent years , he has helped create an algebra iBook with the Allegheny Intermediate Unit and a Grade 8 social studies iBook that is used as the primary textbook in his classes .
In addition to this honor , Welch also is an Apple Distinguished Educator . ADEs are part of a global community of education leaders recognized their work with Apple technology in and out of the classroom , advising Apple on integrating technology as well as serving as content creators for Apple .
