District Leaders Get Involved in the Community
When Plum Borough began developing its new comprehensive plan, Growing Plum Forward, the borough invited PBSD to take part, and Assistant Superintendent Dr. Matt Thomas was honored to represent the district. In this role, Dr. Thomas works alongside community leaders, first responders, and residents to help shape a shared vision for Plum ' s future. The goal is simple but meaningful, to build a roadmap that reflects what families value most: safe neighborhoods, thriving schools, and a strong sense of belonging.
“ Every conversation centers on care for one another, for our community, and for the generations growing up here. It ' s a reminder that when we listen to each other and lead together, amazing things happen. Our goal is to keep education and community connected, because in Plum, planning for the future begins with believing in our people," said Dr. Thomas.

Plum Borough Council
Departmental collaboration is facilitated by the new intergovernmental resources team, which includes PBSD Superintendent Dr. Rick Walsh, three Plum Borough School Board members, three community council members, the borough manager, and the Mayor.
Plum Borough Council President Paul Dern also noted the positive impact of including a PBSD student representative on the Plum Borough Council:“ They’ re not permitted to vote, but they can ask questions and offer their perspective. We tend to see things from an adult point of view, but they often see things differently than we do. So it’ s great to get their input, and it’ s wonderful to see the youth of our community getting involved in serving their borough.”

The PBSD administrative team also rotates attendance at both the Plum Chamber and Plum Rotary. In September, PBSD Chief Financial Officer Ryan Manzer attended the Plum Chamber meeting at the Plum Library, where Library Director Pam Calfo gave an insightful talk on public speaking.
In October, Plum Superintendent Dr. Rick Walsh was one of 30 US education leaders chosen to visit Panama over a long weekend, paid for with a professional development scholarship from the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators( PASA) and Education First Panama. Dr. Walsh and his colleagues were invited to develop a new high school curriculum that builds pathways for student international trips and learning opportunities abroad.
