The secluded, hillside conservation
area along the Allegheny River is host
to steep slopes, views of rockface and
spring wildflowers that create unique,
important habitat for flora and fauna.

Allegheny Land Trust and the
transformation projects at Barking
Slopes,” says Dominion Energy’s
manager of Gas Transmission
Operations, Bill Murphy.
“Once completed, this conservation
area will become a great getaway
for the residents of Plum and the
surrounding communities to enjoy
hiking, mountain biking, bird
watching and many other outdoor
pursuits.”

opportunities it creates for
our community,” says Plum Borough
Manager Mike Thomas. “We’re happy
to support ALT’s efforts in making this
special place even more accessible to
our residents.”
The trail planning for the site began
in 2015, and an internal management
plan was completed in 2017. The
plan involved recommendations
for improving the parking area, trail
access via a new stairway, educational
signage, trail connections and
wayfinding signage to the green
space. In addition to making these
improvements along the lower section
of the property, Landforce helped
ALT fight off Japanese Knotweed
that is encroaching along the trail and
through portions of the property.
The funding allowed ALT
to complete most of Phase One on the
lower trail. Into 2019, the nonprofit’s
stewardship team will complete lower
trail improvements and begin Phase
Two, which will address the upper
portion of the conservation area. ALT
looks forward to partnership with
and support from the community
to continue improving this
green community asset.
