EVERYONE DESERVES A
CLEAN AND BEAUTIFUL
NEIGHBORHOOD
Join the Great American Cleanup of PA
Cleaning up your neighborhood is one
of the best investments you can make.
Whether you have vacant lots plagued
with debris, natural areas that are dumped
on, or litter blown from down the street,
any neighborhood can be lifted up by
positive action.
The 15th annual Keep Pennsylvania
Beautiful Great American Cleanup
of PA can help get you started. From
March 1 through May 31, thousands
of Pennsylvania families and friends
will partake in litter and illegal dump
cleanups, beautification projects such
as tree and flower plantings, recycling
collections and education programs.
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful partners
with PennDOT, the Department of
Environmental Protection, and Keep
America Beautiful to provide free trash
bags, gloves, and safety vests to registered
participants, as supplies last. During Let’s
Pick It Up PA—every day from April 13
through May 6—cleanups registered
with the Great American Cleanup of
PA are eligible to take their trash to
participating landfills free of charge or for
a reduced rate.
Registration can be done online at

TROOPER IWANIEC
10TH ANNIVERSARY
RACE AT ST. VINCENT
COLLEGE
The tenth annual TakeOff: Honor the
Past, Shape the Future Race to benefit
the Trooper Kenton Iwaniec Memorial
Foundation is scheduled for Saturday,
April 13, at Saint Vincent College
in Latrobe.
On March 28, 2008, just moments
after completing his shift at the Avondale
Barracks, Pennsylvania State Trooper
Kenton Iwaniec, a Westmoreland
County native and Saint Vincent College
graduate, was killed by a drunk driver.
On average, an impaired driver kills
someone every 50 minutes. Over 10,000
families each year are destroyed by
impaired drivers.
TakeOff is a race to honor DUI victims,
raise awareness about the seriousness
of impaired driving and encourage
the community to have a positive
influence in the reduction of impaired
driving. All profits will go to the purchase
of Preliminary Breath Test Devices
(PBTs) for the Pennsylvania State Police
and other law enforcement agencies.

REVITALIZATION OF A
WILD GREEN SPACE
A multi-year improvement plan at
Allegheny Land Trust’s (ALT) Barking
Slopes conservation area kicked off last
fall with a unique public, private and
nonprofit collaboration.
The management plan’s improvements
to parking, trails, signage and habitat
at the 151-acre eastern Allegheny
County conservation area are now
being completed by ALT stewardship
staff, volunteers, the nonprofit workforce
development agency Landforce and Plum
Borough with financial support provided
in part by a grant from Dominion Energy.
“The grant from Dominion Energy
and support from Plum Borough Public
Works have enabled us to get work done
that would be difficult for volunteers to
do due to location and sheer amount of
work needed,” ALT Director of Volunteer
& Land Resources Caitlin Seiler says.
“Since protecting it, we’ve known
it’s had a lot of potential. Now we can
harness these resources to help expose
the beauty that already exists at this
green space.”
