2005 Pine-Richland High School graduate
Mike Van Sickle was among the final members chosen
to join 156 players as they teed off in the US Open Golf
Tournament. The golfer earned status as one of the best
golfers in Marquette University’s golf history and was a
two-time WPIAL champion while at Pine-Richland.

Lacrosse Player Named All American
The US Lacrosse program named junior
Marina Miller as an All-American on June 2.
In all, 22 players were selected from a group of
over 60 athletes to represent Western PA in the
Schoolgirls Division of the Women’s National
Tournament at Lehigh University over Memorial
Day weekend. Additionally, Pine-Richland
athletes Maura Flaherty and Caitlyn Byerly
were also selected to represent PR in the 2016
Division 1-Section 2 team. Miller is the first in
Pine-Richland’s history to receive this honor as
a sophomore.

2016 Player Earns Most Positive
Field Hockey Award
2016 graduate Hannah Reiling has been
selected as the 2015-2016 Most Positive Field
Hockey Athlete in Western Pennsylvania. She
was honored during the C. Harper Positive
High School Athlete Awards on June 14 at the
Heinz History Center in Downtown Pittsburgh.
Reiling was nominated by her Varsity Head
Field Hockey Coach Donna Stephenson and
Varsity Assistant Coach Laura Peery.

Student Deemed One of
Best Young Filmmakers in State
Seventh-grader Geneva Doughty is considered one of the
best young filmmakers in the state after judges deemed the
Eden Hall student’s film Fishhook as the best animated short
film in the 2016 Pennsylvania Middle School Computer Fair. The
annual fair, which highlights students’ application skills and
computer technology, took place on May 25. Students are able
to showcase their creativity, learn how to convey information
more dynamically and enhance the learning process. Doughty's
Fishhook also won both Best Directing and Best in Show awards
at Pine-Richland School District's 2016 Rammy Awards ceremony
in May.

State Math Program
Eden Hall Upper Elementary School
fifth-grader Damian Ivanov placed second in
Pennsylvania and third nationally in “Math
Kangaroo,” which took place in March at the
University of Pittsburgh’s Cathedral of Learning.
Math Kangaroo is an international competition
that takes place every year in multiple states
throughout the US. Math Kangaroo, which has
been helping students’ grades 1 through 12
reach their potential in math.

Teacher Accepts National Award on
Behalf of Local Animal Shelter
Pine-Richland Middle School Teacher Kate Pfeifer traveled from May 11 through 13 to
Washington, D.C. to accept a national award on behalf of Animal Friends and Pine-Richland Middle
School. The award was given to Animal Friends for excellence in community service and volunteer
work. Animal Friends credits the middle school staff and students for this recognition for their help
with the annual Paws in the Park fundraiser, the biggest contributor to the shelter’s efforts. The
school was able to help the shelter receive a $10,000 grant. Pfeifer spoke on behalf of the middle
school fundraiser and projects that were developed throughout the years with Animal Friends.
