Gunny’ s Ridge Veteran & First Responder Mission: A Place of Purpose, Healing and Brotherhood

can find understanding, support and meaningful connections.
The mission has also received significant federal support. U. S. Rep. Guy Reschenthaler helped to secure approximately $ 1.2 million in community project funding for the Gunny’ s Ridge Veteran and First Responder Facility. This funding represents an important step toward making the organization’ s long-term vision a reality and developing a dedicated space that can serve veterans and first responders throughout the region.

For veterans and first responders, service does not end when the uniform comes off. The experiences, friendships, sacrifices and challenges that come with serving others can remain a part of their lives for years. In Washington County, Gunny’ s Ridge Veteran & First Responder Mission is working to create a place where those who have served can find support, connection, healing and a renewed sense of purpose.

Gunny’ s Ridge was founded with a simple but meaningful mission— to support, honor and assist veterans and first responders who have dedicated their lives to protecting their country and communities. The organization is developing a private natural setting in Washington County where veterans and first responders can participate in programs designed to strengthen relationships, develop skills and promote personal growth.
The vision for Gunny’ s Ridge extends far beyond simply providing a place to gather. Planned programs include sustainable agriculture, woodworking, team-building and leadership activities, along with therapeutic and educational opportunities. These activities are intended to provide participants with opportunities to work together, learn new skills, build confidence and discover a sense of purpose while surrounded by others who understand the unique experiences associated with military and emergency service.
An important part of the Gunny’ s Ridge story is the late Dr. Tim Murphy, former U. S. congressman, psychologist, and founder and clinical director of Fortis Future. Dr. Murphy was deeply involved with the organization and brought a strong understanding of the challenges faced by veterans, military personnel and first responders. Through Fortis Future, his work focused heavily on individuals affected by psychological trauma and PTSD. His involvement helped strengthen the commitment to creating an environment where those who have served
The community had an opportunity to support that mission on Sept. 4 at the KRSCA Gunny’ s Ridge Sporting Clays Challenge in Weirton, West Virginia. It brought together veterans, first responders, businesses and area residents for a day of fellowship, fundraising and fun.
While the event was an important opportunity to raise funds and awareness, the larger story is Gunny’ s Ridge itself— why it was created, the legacy of Dr. Tim Murphy and Fortis Future, the facility being developed in Washington County, and what the mission can ultimately mean for the veterans and first responders the organization is designed to serve.
Gunny’ s Ridge welcomes community members, businesses, veterans and first responders to learn more, get involved and become part of its continued growth.
Honoring Service. Building Brotherhood. Strengthening Community.
